Anchorage mayor declares for Senate-plus something interesting

Mark Begich, mayor of Anchorage is running for the US Senate. Get outta town you say. It is not so much Begich’s candidacy that interests me, but his past.

Begich’s father, Nick, was a member of the House of Representatives. Nick Begich disappeared along with congressman Hale Boggs in a plane crash in Alaska in 1972. I bring this up because Boggs was investigating Operation Octopus, a CIA surveillance programme at the time. It has also been revealed in recent years by author Dr Joan Mellen that it was Hale Boggs that first sparked New Orleans Disctrict Attorney Jim Garrison to re-investigate the assassination of President Kennedy. Boggs sat on the Warren Commission and requested at the end that his reservations about the report be included in the final text. This didn’t sit well with Chief Justice Earl Warren.

The wreckage of the plane that Boggs and Begich died in was never found. The crash occured in 1972. The most chilling part of this plane crash is that several days after the crash a photograph was sent to Boggs’ staff which clearly showed the wreckage of the plane buried in snow. The letter bore no address.

I wrote to Mark Begich regarding his fathers death a few weeks ago and have received no reply, though that is quite understandable.

It intrigues me that I knew that Begich was running for the US Senate last month and the AP is only reporting it now.
